Be A Fit Mama Clean Eating Detox Day 1: Taking the Plunge

Day-1Day 1 of my quarterly Clean Eating Detox was quite the day. Having mentally prepared myself the evening before, I felt well-equipped to handle the first day of clean eating (no sugar, salt and spices). I started my day with a warm glass of lemon water, followed by a tall glass of psyllium husks in water (but can also be put into pure cranberry juice). This, I would say, is the most interesting part of the cleanse, due to the nature of texture of the husks. You can’t leave the psyllium setting for long in the water, as it will coagulate…The taste is rather mild, but it’s definitely something you want to drink quickly!

Next, I poured myself a nice glass of distilled water and added the recommended allowance of cellfood (you can also fill a water bottle and sip throughout the day); then cut and prepared a large bowl of seasonal fruit, blended a green smoothie (recipe bellow), and took my daily multi-vitamin. Breakfast is served!

Within 90 minutes or so, I was ready for a snack. So I prepared myself a bowl of apples and bananas with a glass of almond milk. This satisfied my appetite, so I didn’t feel the need to eat more. I continued drinking plenty of water while going about my day. My energy was good and I had yet to have a craving (thank goodness!).

By lunchtime (2 hours later) I was rather hungry. My stomach was starting togreen_smoothie yell at me although it felt satiated only an hour before…I prepared a nice salad with kale, carrots, black beans, tomatoes, corn and a splash of lemon. The beans were exactly what I needed, as my body was yearning for a heartier protein. Surprisingly (or maybe not so), I was full within eating half of the bowl, drank some water and set the remaining salad aside. I ate the leftovers for my afternoon snack.

By dinner time I was starting to feel the cravings set in. I had actually gone most of the day without wanting anything sweet or salty, but I could slowly feel the temptation beckoning me. I knew I had to prepare a meal that would satisfy my craving for something sweet, because clearly I wasn’t going to indulge in a peace of chocolate cake…

Dinner consisted of a whole baked sweet potato, steamed kale and rainbow chard, and soaked black beans. Mmmm….craving gone! :-)

That night I slept like a baby. My body thanked me for the nurturing food I put into my body, and I knew that the following 6 days would only bring more benefits. I completed an hour of yoga and 30 minutes of strength training. Day 1 complete.

Recipes:

Green Smoothie (omit protein powder, stevia/agave)

Notes: The psyllium husks in the morning can be prepared in water or organic, pure cranberry juice (not cocktail). Also, you are free to eat as much fruit until lunch time, and as much veggies, beans/legumes as you like throughout the day.
