You are probably wondering why I would encourage you to have a piece of chocolate today. Afterall, chocolate is part of the healthy nutrition forbidden fruit, right? Well, actually I have a couple of reasons why I am would like you to indulge in a hefty piece of chocolately goodness (maybe not super hefty). One is in celebration of International Chocolate Day, and the other is simply because it can be good for you.
Yes, it’s true. There is a day celebrated throughout the world just for chocolate, and that day is today. September 13th has been designated as International Chocolate Day and in my opinion, for good reason.
Chocolate, also known as Schokolade, cikkulata and many other names is a derived from the cocoa tree, mainly located in tropical rainforests. From the cocoa trees, the cocoa beans are harvested, dried, roasted and ground to create refined cocoa, which is then mixed in varied amounts to create the chocolate most of the world knows as, milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate.
Besides chocolate’s undeniable flavor, it holds a number of nutritional qualities. Not only does chocolate carry carbohydrates, fats and vegetable protein, but it also contains phenols (reduces the risk of coronary heart disease), catechins (antioxidants which may help protect the body from cancer) and endorphins (natural opiates released in the brain that can help reduce pain).
If those benefits aren’t reason enough to eat chocolate today, then I don’t know what would! So if you are so inclined to have a piece of chocolate today, or any other day for that matter; feel comforted in knowing that you are still giving your body what it craves, but with added nutritional benefits.
See, nutrition can be fun!
