Oh, the Pain! - Combating Muscle Soreness
It happens to us all: we start a new fitness program or introduce a new exercise to our routine, and within days (sometimes hours), the pain, stiffness and tenderness begins. This pain is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (or DOMS), and can be prevented.
Here are some recommendations to minimize the soreness after a hard workout:
- Always warm-up the body completely.
- Perform a warm-up specific to the body parts being worked
- Take a gradual approach to introducing new exercises
- Stretch! Be sure to stretch your muscles before, during and after your workout
Don’t let DOMS prevent you from achieving your goals. Remember the four strategies to optimize your body for post workout achiness.
