There are no wrong or silly questions (when they are serious and pertain to fitness and nutrition :-) , so don’t hesitate to ask!

Since there is no time like the present; here is an answer to a question I was asked recently by a client…

Q: I’ve always been told that I should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day. Is this true?

A: This is a question that is asked more than any other, and the short answer is no. The long answer? Well, here goes…

Throughout the years, doctors, teachers and parents told us that it was important to drink at least 8 8 oz. glasses of water per day. Of course we would moan and groan, because really, who drinks that much water? Well the fact of the matter is, this amount of water could be excessive and lead to overhydration and more severe condition called hyponantremia. What the heck is hyponatremia you ask?

Hyponatremia is basically low blood sodium, which can lead to problems such as tissue damage, brain interference and decrease in muscle function. Symptoms of Hyponatremia include nausea, fatigue and muscle weakness.

So what can you do to prevent over drinking? Drink when you’re thirsty (water, not soda, tea or coffee), and drink a couple glasses of water after a workout. Never drink to the point that you fill full, bloated or begin to feel nauseous. This is a sign of drinking too much.

Water is very important in keeping the body healthy, but there has never been any substantiated evidence that 8 glasses a day is the magic number.
